Bible Reading for 2012 Chapter Theme – “A Call to Arms”

St. Paul inspired the faithful to be strong in their  faith 2000 years ago and still inspires us today.  This is the time for Catholics to be strong and active in their faith!

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.  Put on
the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of
the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against
the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this
present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the
heavenly places.  Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to
withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  Stand
therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of
righteousness,  and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel
of peace;  besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you
can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one.  And take the helmet of
salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Ephesians 6:10-17

Please look at this – Religious Leaders Challenge Contraception Mandate

Nancy and Mark Bauman’s daughter writes for the Catholic News Agency in Washington, D.C.   Michelle has recently covered the controversy which requires health insurance plans to cover contraception – including drugs that cause abortion – and sterilization free of charge.  Following is an exerpt:

Michelle Bauman - Catholic News Agency

Washington D.C., Jan 20, 2012 / 06:31 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Numerous religious leaders slammed the Obama administration for violating consciences by refusing to reverse a contraception mandate and instead delay its full implementation by only a year.

“Never before has the federal government forced individuals and organizations to go out into the marketplace and buy a product that violates their conscience,” said Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. bishops’ conference.

“This shouldn’t happen in a land where free exercise of religion ranks first in the Bill of Rights.”  Click to read full text of article: http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/religious-leaders-blast-hhs-over-contraception-mandate#.Txre_Xvlx3U.email

And take a look at this article about how the Army appears to have silenced their Bishop on this mandate.  It is astounding that our freedom of speech and religion are being violated in this fashion.

Highlights from January Speaker, Jeff Kemp

Jeff Kemp, a former Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback and son of Senator Jack Kemp, has seen his share of blitzes. Jeff was our guest speaker on Thursday, January 5, 2012. Jeff is husband to Stacy and father of four boys.  He spent 11 years as quarterback within the NFL.

Jeff said that a pro-football career is glamorous but can also be a lesson in humility.  And that humility is very often the correct response to challenging situations (rather than false pride.)  He is passionate about family and faith and spoke very strongly about the importance of strong marriages and families in our society. His talk was very much in keeping with our “Call to Arms” chapter theme this year, he encouraged men and woman to be firm in their marriage commitment and strong for each other in order to build a strong society. He also passed out the attached flyer with tips on building Stronger Families.  Please check back soon for the recorded video of his speech to us.

Presidents: Thank you Sam DePizzol for 2011 – Welcome to Denzil Samuels for 2012

A huge thank you to Sam DePizzol for his service to the Denver Chapter as President for the 2011 year. As Sam found out through personal experience, each President must perfect their “shhhhhhhh” to get people to sit down to dinner. Please welcome the Chapter President for 2012, Denzil Samuels. Our chapter theme for 2012 is Catholic Leadership: A Call to Arms. Please take a moment to read Denzil’s “Call to Arms” message to our chapter:

On behalf of our 2012 Denver Chapter Board of Directors, we have selected the theme: “Catholic Leadership – A Call To Arms.” As leaders in business and in the community, we want each and everyone of you to ask the question “What will I do, not just to live my faith in every aspect of my life…but to fight for it.”

The 18th Century British statesman and philosopher Edmund Burke said, ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’

We are being attacked by the media, attacked by our legal system, attacked by those who seek to taint our Church, attacked by those who seek profit from our Church, attacked by other religions and attacked by complacency of our fellow Catholics. There is even complacency in our Catholic schools and in our colleges. Our board, our programming, our events and our chaplain are all focused on re-igniting our leadership to fight for our faith. We cannot afford to ‘do nothing’ in a year of significant change for all of us. In 2012 we will see a new Bishop in our Archdiocese, the roll out of changes to our Mass and the election of a new president in our Country, to name but a few. In 2012, more than any other, let us be guided by the Holy Spirit to touch all those we interact with the power of our Catholic Faith. Let’s be proud of all the GOOD that Catholicism has done for the whole world, over the last two thousand years.

So please join us, not just for the wonderful dinner, speeches and meetings, but make that extra effort to join us for Rosary, Confession and Mass beforehand. As importantly, please let us make a difference in taking what we discuss back to our businesses and back to our communities. We are putting the finishing touches on our 2012 programming schedule…please watch this space.

I would like to give a special thanks to Sam for serving us so wonderfully in 2011 as our President. He has been a shining example to all of us of leadership with humility. My thanks also to Paul Dudzic, for his continual guidance as ‘Past President’.

May God continue to bless each and every one of you in everything you do. I am humbled and honored to be your President in 2012 and I am proud to be Roman Catholic.

New Women’s Forum Starting

A new Denver Chapter Legatus Woman’s Forum is starting up.  Contact Nancy Kopp if you’re interested in joining it.

Members Enjoyed Exclusive Interview with Tom Monaghan.

Mr. Monaghan  joined us as we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Legatus organization, which he founded.  Tom was incredibly successful in his ownership of both Dominos Pizza and the Detroit Tigers.  He now has directed his life’s work to the advancement of our faith and conversion of souls through the establishment and running of Ave Maria City and University near Naples Florida.

The topic of his talk was  “Ave Maria: The New Catholic Community.”  Denzil Samuels interviewed Mr. Monaghan in a question and answer format that was both entertaining and informative.  Members learned such nuggets as how Tom got into the pizza business with a family member and ended with a well-received description of his passion of the long-term results to our country’s Catholic future in the  Catholic families, laity, attorneys and priests that are being formed at Ave Maria University.
