Influential author, Catholic therapist, and speaker Monica H. Breaux PhD, MSW, explained how the wisdom of our Catholic teaching on sexuality is validated by scientific research. She explained how both the family and trinity may be called a communion of persons. The married couple as designed by God may very well be an endangered species in our country.

It was amusing and enlightening to see some brain scans and differences of a man and women’s brain. For example, different areas of a brain will light up for a man and woman when they are hungry!

Very useful to the members was an overview of the languages of apology: I am Sorry, I was wrong, I’ll try not to do that again and Will you forgive me. Each person has their own style of what is an acceptable and meaningful apology to them.

She finished the talk strong on the benefits of studying the virtues especially as it related to marriage and the Church. Our chapter has the benefit of member Steve Markel who is an expert in this area; his non-profit, Families of Character, teaches married couples the Catholic Virtues.

Dear Members,

We had a spectacular turn out on 3rd May of 105 people! Well done. Thank you too to our members who brought guests. Our guests included:
Monica Breaux, our guest speaker
Brian Von Gruben, our Legatus Regional Director
Timothy Kaiser, son of Dale Kaiser
Prospective members, Roman & Eve Langston, guests of Brian and
Ann Macaulay
Prospective members, Roger & Gail Dieckhaus, guests of Brian Von Gruben
Seth DeMoor- our videographer
Anniversaries: Congratulations to Pat & Jean Wolach celebrating their 26th anniversary (alas they could not join us as the anniversary was the same night

My sincere thanks to all our contributors to the evening Mary Zimmerman (re women’s retreat), Tom Heule (re men’s retreat & spirituality moment), Lisa Heule (spirituality moment), Paul Dudzik (God Within), Randy Hammond (speaker intro), Matt Tynan (testimony to defend our religious freedom), Andy Newland (2nd company to file a lawsuit against this administration to defend our rights as Catholics). For more information on Andy’s filing, please see:

Also a very sincere THANK YOU to Mary Janiczek for the wonderful work and demo of our chapter’s website, to truly take it to the next level. Thank you also to Mary and Joseph for contributing to some of the website expenses. Your generosity is really valued and appreciated!

Catholic News Agency (CNA)
Some of you have been asking us how to keep in touch with current events of significance. The Catholic News Agency is a solid source. I think we all need to visit this website on a regular basis. The link to this site is below and we have instituted an RSS feed from our site. Ladies and gentlemen, please visit this site regularly and please stay in touch. This is so important, not just as Catholics, but as leaders. Thank you.

Observations

We try to constantly get your feedback and observations and for that the board thank you all. I do want to highlight 2 things from the last 2 meetings.

1. Our internal Legatus business took too long
Response: As you can see from the list of speakers above, it probably did take too long! We tried to get through as much information as possible, however, I think we tried to do too much and we will cut this down going forward.

2. Some members were talking and laughing while the guest speaker was trying to talk
Response: Yes, it was noticed by many members and is unfortunate. We also received this feedback from 2 of our guest speakers (over the last two events). I do understand that getting together every month is great ‘catch up’ time. However, please can I ask you all to be attentive during our speaker’s time. I know that no one was intentionally trying to be rude to our speaker, however, please could I ask that if you need to talk to another member, kindly step out of the refectory area, so as not to disrupt the speaker. We are a loud bunch and can sometimes be intimidating to our speakers Thank you for your consideration.

Our next event is June 7th. We hope to see many of you there. Patrick McCarthy (2012 Chapter VP) will host the event. Shari and I will be on the east coast celebrating my sister’s 50th birthday!

Thank you and God Bless you all,

Denzil

The Newland family, owner of Hercules Industries, exhibited amazing fortitude in their decision to fight the HHS mandates and Obamacare with a Federal lawsuit on behalf of religious freedom for the Catholic church and our country. The Newlands have appeared in the national press and media; Hugh Hewitt discussed this on his radio show on May 2. Following is an excerpt from a CNA article, click here for entire article:

Denver, Colo., May 1, 2012 / 06:03 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- A self-insured Catholic-owned business has filed a lawsuit that could potentially stop the Obama administration’s contraception and abortion-causing drug mandate within the next three months.

Courage Definition: Fortitude is commonly called courage, but it is different from much of what we think of as courage today. Fortitude is always reasoned and reasonable; the person exercising fortitude is willing to put himself in danger if necessary, but he does not seek danger for danger’s sake.

In an Open Letter to Legatus Members, Executive Director, John Hunt, informed the members of the following action taken by Legatus National in reference to the HHS Mandate:

“The Legatus Board of Governors, in a Special meeting held on April 10, 2012, and with no negative votes cast, voted to sue the appropriate departments of the United States government over the burden imposed by its imposition of regulations issued under the 2010 Affordable Care Act (commonly known as “Obamacare”) that force individuals of certain religious faiths to violate their deepest held religious beliefs. This action will be filed within the next few days.

This regulation imposes burdens upon Legatus that are in contradiction with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Such services cannot and will not be provided to Legatus employees.“

Dear Friends,

We had a spectacular turn out in February with over 105 attendees!! Our three guest couples included: Steve & Tami Smith, Ryan & Ann Clement and Rick & Kate Wagner.

Thanks to Patrick & Chris McCarthy, Walt & Ellyn Coughlin and Curtis & Michaelann Martin for inviting our guests.

Though I was unable to be there personally, Jonathan kindly sent me a CD of his speech entitled ‘Behind Enemy Lines’ and so I know that the subject matter and delivery would have been perfect against our theme for this year. This year’s theme couldn’t be more relevant “Catholic Leadership – A Call to Arms”. As Patrick’s outline of the issues we are facing with HHS mandate from our current President suggest, we have to stand up and fight for our faith and for religious freedom.

I spent 3 years in my working career in Saudi Arabia (or as the Saudi’s refer to it..”The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”). There was no tolerance in the country for Churches of any sort (only Mosques). One was not allowed to wear a cross around one’s neck. There were even ‘Religious Police’ whose job it was to monitor the behavior of citizens in public and arrest anyone who showed disrespect to Islam.
My dear friends, there is a very fine line between what I have just described and what is currently going on in our country. We are being asked to take down The Cross in public places, the removal of the Ten Commandments, our President saying this is not a Christian nation, The HHS mandate, children in public schools being taught that BC does not stand for Before Christ but Before the Common Era. Please beware. If we do nothing we will lose our religious freedom.

I started the year with a quote from Edmund Burke (18th Century English Philosopher):

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

So what are we to do? What can this Denver Chapter do? What can each of you do? Let me outline a starting point:

Leverage the power of the Chapter: We will be setting up an ICON on the website called ‘A Call to Arms’. In there we will be listing specific things that we can each do. For example, petitioning against HHS, listing typical responses to frequent criticisms of the Catholic Church, listing all the good things the Catholic Church has done throughout the world (and continues to do) to give you ammunition to defend Her.

In addition, I look forward to soliciting some of your ideas at next week’s chapter meeting.

We belong to the Church founded by Jesus Christ Himself, not Luther, not King Henry VIII, not Mohammed…But Christ.

We need to fight for Him more now than any time in our Country’s history.
